Playing for a Cause Fundraiser – Friday 20 November 2020

Manning Tennis Club will once again be Playing for a Cause as we look to raise funds for Pancare Foundation to enable them to support individuals and families impacted by Pancreatic Cancer, fund vital research and continue their efforts to raise awareness.

Our annual Playing for a Cause fundraiser, an event close to our hearts, will be held on Friday 20 November from 5pm onwards. The fundraiser promises to be the perfect way to usher in the weekend with junior match play, timed team competition, pickleball, bingo, food including a sausage sizzle, raffles, auctions and the bar facilities available throughout the evening.

Fundraising efforts

As part of our fundraising efforts, we’ve set up an online Playing for a Cause donation page which people can share with their network. We’re also encouraging people to create their own donation page for Pancare Foundation, sharing why they are playing for a cause.

Make sure you remember to join the MTC Playing for a Cause fundraising team through this donation link (or searching for MTC Playing for a Cause). The individual that raises the most money throughout November will be in the running to receive a prize.

Junior Social Match Play - 5pm to 6pm

This year, the fundraiser will be introducing a junior match play element from 5pm to 6pm for juniors 15 and under who are able to play matches using green or yellow ball.

Entry is $5 per person and at this stage we will be limited to 20 participants. You can register to participate by signing up on Eventbrite (sign up for junior match play ticket) or emailing us your name, age and playing ability if you're new to the club. For the younger ones who may not quite be up to playing matches as yet, we'll set up a court with mini nets to use with parents (if you wish) so you don't miss out.

Team Event: Timed Doubles Tournament – 6.30pm to 7.45pm

As part of the fundraiser, we’ll be holding a Team Competition from 6.30pm to 7.45pm in the format of a timed handicap doubles with each team playing three rounds of approximately 25 minutes matches.

The competition is open to players of different playing abilities and there are prizes up for grabs for the winning team which is a bonus to playing for a worthy cause.

Similar to last year, each team can comprise of 2 to 4 players although only 2 players can of course play each round. This year, each group of 4 teams will be allocated designated courts so you’ll play 3 matches back to back and non-playing teammates will be allowed out on court cheering your team on.

Entry fee is $30 per team with places limited to just 16 teams so make sure you register early. You can do this by signing up via Eventbrite or by completing this team registration form electronically or as a hardcopy at the club and emailing it to manningtennis@westnet.com.au or giving it to Dwayne.

Pre-order your food by Wednesday 11 November

In addition to the ever-popular sausage sizzle ($2), which you can purchase on the night from 5.30pm, we’ll also be serving chicken satay sticks and vegetarian potato curry puffs from about 6.30pm.

However, you will need to pre-order your satay (6 sticks for $10 or 10 sticks for $15 served with sauce and cucumber) and curry puffs ($2 each) by Wednesday 11 November at 5pm using this online form.

If you would like to have some chicken satay at a later date, you can also order take-home 25 sticks pack ($30) along with peanut satay sauce ($7 for a tub sufficient for 50 sticks) using the same form.

As another fundraising initiative, we’ve created this group order form here that individuals can use to collate food orders from friends and family and place them as one big order under his or her name. There is a prize for the person who coordinates the biggest group order.

Donating food: If you’re a whiz in the kitchen and would like to donate food that we can sell on the night to raise funds, please do reach out and let us know as we welcome any generous offer.

Pickleball, Bingo and more

We will be turning court 7 into 2 pickleball courts so people can have a go at this game which is suitable for all ages. And who knows - an impromptu pickleball ‘tournament’ could very well take place.

Following the online success, we'll be running 2 rounds of Bingo – one at 6.45pm and one at 7.15pm where players can purchase a Bingo Card for $2 and mark those numbers off.

Of course, people will be able to socialise catching up with old and new friends, enjoy the bar facilities, utilise any free courts outside of scheduled events, purchase raffle tickets and participate in our auction.

About Pancreatic Cancer and Pancare Foundation

It is estimated that in 2019, 3,599 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in Australia (1,889 men and 1,710 women).

Pancreatic cancer is projected to be the 2nd leading cause of cancer related deaths by 2030.

Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality of all major cancers with 9.8% of patients reaching the 5-year survival mark. Two thirds of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of diagnosis.

Survival rates for pancreatic cancer have not changed significantly in nearly 40 years.

Due to the lack of research into pancreatic cancer, many treatments and surgeries for the disease are still being trialed. Pancare encourages patients to do their research and seek opinions from a number of different medical professionals, to ensure the highest chance of survival and recovery.

As the only charity of its kind in Australia, the Pancare Foundation supports world-leading research and delivers programs designed to address individual and changing patient needs, from the point of diagnosis through to recovery and bereavement.
