Breaking Barriers - A community wheelchair tennis event presented by Netspark

As part of our wheelchair tennis program (the WA Top Spinners), the club held the first edition of Breaking Barriers - a Community Wheelchair Tennis event on Saturday 31 August 2024.

The event was designed as a follow up to our annual Smashing Barriers event which will be held in January each year, and featured singles matchplay, adaptive doubles matches as well as the ever popular Hit the Target challenge.

Breaking Barriers also incorporated three movement challenges which tested the agility of participants in a chair with and without holding a tennis racquet.

Designed to welcome all playing abilities (including brand new players), the event was a great success thanks to the players, our volunteers and our wonderful sponsors, in particular our major sponsor Netspark who continues to generously support the delivery of our wheelchair tennis program.

The first edition of the event was also somewhat special as it was the final activity of a week that saw Francois Vogelsberger (Tennis Australia’s National High-Performance Wheelchair Tennis Coach) assist us with running several development sessions during the week and imparting plenty of skills and knowledge as we move forward with our attempts to grow wheelchair tennis in Western Australia.

With a number of our players set to travel to the Nationals championship held in Melbourne in a couple of weeks, it is certainly an exciting time for wheelchair tennis in our State.

Getting involved with wheelchair tennis

We are always looking for people to get involved with wheelchair tennis as a player or a volunteer to help out. We don't expect you to have in-depth or even any knowledge of wheelchair tennis to begin but all we ask is for a desire to help out.

Breaking Barriers Event (2nd edition) - Saturday 5 October 2024

Planning is already on the way with the idea being that we might run our Breaking Barriers event three times a year ahead of our Smashing Barriers event.

The next event is set to be held on Saturday 5 October with matches likely to start from 8am and some challenges available from 9.30am before finishing by 1pm.

If you are interested in being a part of it, please make sure you register for the event at https://www.trybooking.com/CVGMD
